Frankenstein is a Gothic novel written by Mary Godwin , the young daughter of the philosopher William Godwin , and wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley . The novel can be read as a forerunner of modern scientific experiments because it is about scientific research .But it poses a dramatic question .It is about the moral responsibility of the scientist when his discoveries go beyond his capacity of control , that is , when he explores the limits of human knowledge M.Shelley has been able to predict clearly the consequences of immoral technological utilization so that her tale of horror can’t be considered merely as a fantastical ghost story , but rather as a profound understanding (insight) into the probable consequences of morally insensitive scientific research . M . Shelley warns the reader against the use of scientific intelligence” divorced from moral principles “(theme of morality). Nowadays scientists and society in general are not interested in exploring nature but building a new artificial substitute for nature . Recent research in genetic engineering and biochemistry , eugenics and extra -uterine fertilization have brought to light the opportunity to manipulate life-forms something which was previously only reserved to nature and chance . In her hovel , it seems as though M.S. has seen into the future. Her message is clear: a morally irresponsible scientific development can create a monster that can destroy human civilization itself. The logical question one can ask is whether science is really going to improve the world. Will our lives be better ? Apart from these questions it is important that we continually ask the right questions and supply the best answers . It is our responsibility as humans . FRANKENSTEIN The novel is written in form of letters by the Captain of a ship to his own sister . In his letters the narrator tells the story of a strange man he has helped during a voyage to the North Pole . The man -Victor Frankenstein- is taken aboard the ship and one day , before dying, tells the Captain his story . He is a scientist from Geneva , Switzerland. He devotes himself to scientific studies in particular the mystery of the origin of life and finally he discovers the cause of life . He builds a creature assembling various parts that he takes from the bodies of dead people . The creature begins to breathe and opens his eyes but he is so horrible that Frankenstein , terrified , escapes. At first the monster shows love and generosity towards people but his love becomes hatred and violence when he is rejected because of his horrible appearance. He lives in solitude and doesn’t bear the desolation of his life so he begins to hate his maker who has abandoned him . He asks the scientist to give him a female companion . At first Frankenstein agrees but soon after he realizes that he will probably make a second monster. So he destroys the new being . From that moment on , Frankenstein’s life is a nightmare . The monster persecutes him and kills those that he loves Frankenstein wants to destroy the creature , but he dies , consumed by the agony of his grief. The monster sees his creator dead and kills himself .
