The Finnish National Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and its
Applications} is a doctoral programme funded by the Ministry of
Education and Culture, and it comprises the following universities:
University of Helsinki (coordinating unit), University of Eastern
Finland, University of Jyväskylä, University of Oulu, University of
Tampere, Tampere University of Technology, Aalto University (2 units),
University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. For additional

The Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and its Applications invites
applications for at least

FOUR (4) DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS

The fixed-period appointments will commence on January 1, 2013, or
later, and the length of the appointments will be up to three years.

The doctoral student positions are intended for full-time study and
research leading to a doctoral degree in an area covered by the
Doctoral Programme. The doctoral student will, in addition to research
for the doctoral thesis, participate in teaching and other duties at
the relevant department.

Applicants to be elected for the doctoral student positions
are expected to have completed a Master's degree (or an equivalent one)
by the end of 2012 and to have an approved research plan. Successful
applicants are in addition expected to have demonstrated ability and
motivation for postgraduate studies and for completing the doctoral
degree in accordance with the study and research plans. The doctoral
student positions are intended for work in one of the units belonging
to the Doctoral Programme and applicants are expected to apply to be
supervised by a teacher (or teachers) from the Doctoral Programme, see

The contract of employment will be signed with the university in which
the doctoral student is working.

Doctoral students who already have funding from the Doctoral Programme
may, if necessary, apply for an extension of their period of funding.

Salary will be paid according to levels 1--4 of the university salary
scale for teaching and research staff, in addition to which the
appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work
performance.

Applications should be addressed to the Board of the Doctoral Programme,
and are required to contain the following attachments:
- research plan for the doctoral thesis, including a tentative schedule
for its completion
- curriculum vitae
- two (2) letters of recommendation, which may also be sent by e-mail
directly to the Director of the Doctoral Programme; for a doctoral
student applying for an extension of his/her period of funding
(from the Doctoral Programme) a statement from the supervisor(s) about
the progress of the doctoral studies will suffice
- other relevant documentation (such as copies of publications or
preprints by the applicant).

The position of research scientist requires a doctoral degree, pedagogical expertise and teaching

12 PhD and 5 Postdoc Positions, European Comp Finance Network

12 PhD positions (36 months) and 5 post-doc positions (12 months) are
available within the newly established Initial Training Network (ITN)
"STRIKE- Novel Methods in Computational Finance", funded by the Marie
Curie actions under the FP7 People programme from the European
Commission.

The motivation for this training network is the need for a network of
highly educated European scientists in the field of financial
mathematics and computational science, so as to exchange and discuss
current insights and ideas, and to lay groundwork for future
collaborations. Besides a series of internationally recognized
researchers from academics, leading quantitative analysts from the
financial industry also participate in this network.

The Special Research Program (SFB) "ALGORITHMIC AND ENUMERATIVE
COMBINATORICS," a four-year programme (March 1, 2013 - Feb. 28, 2017)
funded by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF, is offering post-
and pre-doctoral positions at each of its three associated research
groups at the University of Vienna, at the RISC of the Johannes
Kepler University Linz, and at the Vienna University of Technology.

"Algorithmic and Enumerative Combinatorics," as we understand it,
is the general research area which is defined by the interplay
of the fields of Enumerative Combinatorics, Analytic Combinatorics,
and Algorithmics.
The SFB will join the forces of the Combinatorics Group at the
University of Vienna, the Algorithmic Combinatorics Group at

A parte l'annuncio che non so se sia particolare o meno, è difficile per un matematico ottenere un dottorato o un dottorato con una borsa di studio? Dipende dall'Università? Dal numero di iscritti? Oltre che da un buon punteggio di laurea. Curiosità.

L'ho pubblicato solo perché ho pensato che magari qualcuno poteva essere interessato tra gli utenti... inoltre i dottorati in Norvegia sono tra i più pagati al mondo :).
Per risponderti, in generale fuori dall'Italia ti pagano per fare il dottorato. E' un lavoro come un altro, quindi serve avere un buon curriculum (corsi con contenuti impegnativi, buona media, tesi con un professore conosciuto o all'estero sono elementi che giocano a favore) per essere ammessi e ci sono università più o meno prestigiose.
Ci sono anche campi più o meno "trendy", questo secondo me andrebbe preso in considerazione da uno studente che progetta di fare ricerca. Se ti piacciono due cose, meglio che ti specializzi in quella che coinvolge più gruppi di ricerca o in posti dove tu vuoi andare a lavorare.

Non tutte le università hanno un test. A me ad esempio hanno fatto un semplice colloquio di lavoro, dove mi hanno chiesto che corsi avevo fatto e hanno guardato la mia media. 20 minuti in totale.

Non per sapere i fatti tuoi...ma di cosa ti occupi?!
E quant'è più o meno la differenza di stipendio, in media, tra un dottorando italiano e uno dei paesi nordici?!

Lavoro nel gruppo finlandese di Inverse problems, in particolare in problemi di inverse scattering.

Per rispondere sugli stipendi: in Italia un dottorando prende 0 (a Bologna la metà dei posti sono senza borsa di studio) o circa 800-1000 euro al mese netti (questo secondo le stime ricevute da vari miei colleghi sparsi in Italia). In Norvegia siamo sui 3300 lordi circa. Qui sui 2000 lordi. Dico "lordi" perché le tasse, giustamente, sono poi calibrate sulla tua situazione familiare e di reddito.

Caspita devi essere un settore di ricerca davvero interessante, complimenti!
Si, sapevo che in Italia gli stipendi sono quelli che sono, anzi parlando più volte con alcuni miei docenti del mio desiderio di proseguire gli studi con un dottorato di ricerca, tutti mi hanno detto "ma ti conviene!?...guadagni più con le ripetizioni private!"
Alcuni ricercatori del mio dipartimento mi hanno detto che percepiscono 5 euro l'ora per fare le esercitazioni, che paragonati ai 13/15 euro che in un ora si possono guadagnare con le ripetizioni (da studente), mi fa pensare a quanto sia triste la situazione oggi in Italia.
Poi penso alle condizioni di vita di un paese nordico, tipo la Norvegia e immagino: ordine, pulizia, educazione, rispetto per le regole...cose che qui in Italia sono spesso un'utopia.
