I think "singular they" is less awful than any of the alternatives I can think of. Default "he/his" hasn't really been acceptable for a very long time. You could just do it without saying you are doing it, I think.

Ci ho pensato su per un po', vedendo anche qualche uso, e sono arrivata alla conclusione che, per i miei gusti, l'uso di they (e di conseguenza their) è la scelta migliore. Linguisticamente più elegante, evitando l'uso del goffo she\he (e si evita pure problema del genere 'binario').
Pure l'uso sempre di she\her mi sembrava stiracchiato.

Il punto di svolta è stato quando mi sono bloccata, perché mi è capitato di dovere 'parlare male', dire tipo 'è impazzito', e mi sembrava brutto metterlo al femminile. Che fare? Quando è un complimento mettere al femminile e quando è un insulto metterlo al maschile ? Mi sono trovata di fronte a questo dilemma ridicolo.

Quindi ho preso a considerare il they.

Prima, quando mi è capitava, non capivo e pensavo a un errore di stampa, ma avevo anche il sentore di qualcosa di shakesperiano, perché Shackespeare usa pronomi strani, ora arcaici, tipo thou invece di you.

Infatti! Ho controllato.

In Shackespeare c'è they per il singolare.

Quindi, fiera di trovarmi in compagnia di Shackespeare ho deciso di adottare they.

Almeno ci ho provato, speriamo che non faccio la figura del buzzurro che scrive inglese.

@ j18eos Anche a me non piace questa 'neutral gender dictatorship', come dici.
Il confine tra rispetto degli altri, e di ogni 'genere', e intolleranza sul modo di esprimersi è alle volte labile.
E come si dice a Napoli, sembra che non tengono a che pensa'.
Però, se qualcuno deve sentirsi ferito, a torto a ragione, vabbe', mi adatto e mi esprimo come preferiscono loro.

Ci deve essere qualche questione, un po' forse anche polemica con l'editore, di Ariel Rubinstein. Per cui forse l'editore ha deciso per la doppia versione 'he' e 'she'.

Infatti scrive Rubinstein nella prefazione a un suo libro del 2012 (Princeton University Press):

Throughout this book I use only male pronouns. This is my deliberate choice and does not reflect the policy of the editors or the publishers. I believe that continuous reminders of the he/she issue simply divert readers' attention. Language is of course important in shaping our thinking, but I feel that is more effective to raise the issue of discrimination against women in the discussion of the "issue" rather than raising flags on every page of a book on economic theory.
