La prima cosa che mostro è il seguente
Lemma
Sia\( \text{ Mis} (\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) := \{ g : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C} \mid u \text{ è misurabile} \} \) e \( u \in \text{ Mis} (\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \). Sia
\[ M_u : L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \to \text{Mis} (\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \quad \quad f \mapsto uf \]
Allora \( M_u(L^2(\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C})) \subseteq L^2(\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \) se e solo se \( u \in L^{\infty} (\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \).
Dimostrazione:
La sufficienza è chiara. Mostriamo la necessità. Supponiamo per assurdo che sia \( u \notin L^{\infty} (\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \), allora per ogni $K \in \mathbb{N}$ l'insieme \( S_K:= \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid |u(x)| > K \} \) ha misura positiva. Per ogni $R \in \mathbb{N} $ sia $B_R$ la palla centrata in $0$ di raggio $R$. Allora
\[ \bigcup_{R \in \mathbb{N} } S_K \cap B_R = S_K \Rightarrow \exists \, \overline{R}_K \in \mathbb{R} \mid \mu (S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K}) >0 \]
Pongo quindi per ogni \( K \in \mathbb{N} \)
\[ f_{K}(x) := \frac{\chi_{S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K}} (x)}{ \sqrt{\mu(S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K})}} \in L^2(\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \quad \quad \| f_{K} \|_{ L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})} =1 \]
Allora
\[ \|M_u\|_{\text{op: } L^2 \to L^2} \ge \| M_u f_{K} \|_{ L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})}^2 = \int_{\mathbb{R}} |uf_{K}|^2 d\mu = \int_{S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K} } |uf_{K}|^2 d\mu > K^2 \frac{\mu(S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K})}{\mu(S_K \cap B_{\overline{R}_K})} = K^2 \]
Per l'esercizio:
Prendo \( u \in L^{\infty} (\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \) e considero l'operatore $M_u$ definito come sopra. Sia $\lambda \in \mathbb{C}$.
Spettro puntuale:
\[ M_u -\lambda I \text{ iniettivo } \Leftrightarrow [ f \in L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \, , \, (M_u -\lambda I)f \Rightarrow f =0 ] \Leftrightarrow [ f \in L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \, , \, (u-\lambda) f =0 \Rightarrow f=0 ] \Leftrightarrow \mu ( \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid u = \lambda \}) =0 \]
Da cui lo spettro puntuale \( \sigma_p (M_u) = \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \mid \mu ( \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid u = \lambda \}) >0 \} \)
Risolvente: sia \( \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \setminus \sigma_p(M_u) \)
\[ \lambda \in \rho(M_u) \Leftrightarrow M_u - \lambda I \text{ è invertibile} \Leftrightarrow (M_u- \lambda I)^{-1} \text{ è ben definito da } L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \to L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \]
e poiché
\[ (M_u- \lambda I)^{-1} = M_{\frac{1}{u-\lambda}} : L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \to \text{Mis} (\mathbb{R} ; \mathbb{C}) \quad \quad f \mapsto \frac{f}{u-\lambda} \]
si ha per il Lemma che \( (M_u- \lambda I)^{-1} \) è ben definito da \( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \) in \( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \) se \( {\frac{1}{u-\lambda}} \in L^{\infty} (\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \) cioè se esiste \( \epsilon >0 \) tale che \( |u(x)-\lambda| \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \)
Da cui l'insieme risolvente è \( \rho(M_u) = \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \mid \exists \, \epsilon>0 \mid |u(x)-\lambda| \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \} \)
Spettro continuo: sia ora \( \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \setminus (\sigma_p(M_u) \cup \rho(M_u)) \). Dunque si ha che \( \mu ( \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid u(x) = \lambda \}) = 0 \) e che \( \nexists \, \epsilon >0 \mid |u(x) - \lambda | \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \) i.e. per ogni \( \epsilon >0 \) si ha \( \mu ( \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid |u(x)-\lambda| < \epsilon \}) >0 \) . Mostro che in tal caso l'immagine di \( M_u-\lambda I \) è densa in \( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \).
Sia quindi \( g \in L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \), devo mostrare che esiste una successione \( \{g_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}} \subset (M_u-\lambda I)( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})) \) tale che \( g_n \to g \) nel senso di \( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})) \).
Sia \( A_n := \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid |u(x) - \lambda | \ge \frac{1}{n} \} \) per ogni $n \ge 1$ e definisco per ogni $n \ge 1$
\[ g_n := g \chi_{A_n} \in (M_u-\lambda I)( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})) \]
infatti
\[ g_n = (M_u-\lambda I)h_n \quad \quad h_n = \frac{g_n}{u-\lambda} \in L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \]
giacché
\[ \| h_n \|_{ L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})}^2 = \int_{A_n} \frac{|g|^2}{ |u-\lambda|^2} d \mu \le n^2 \| g \|_{ L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C})}^2 \]
Infine chiaramente \( g_n \to g \) q.o. e per convergenza dominata pure in \( L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}) \).
Da cui abbiamo che \( \sigma_c (M_u) = \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \mid \mu ( \{ x \in \mathbb{R} \mid u(x) = \lambda \}) = 0 \text{ e } \nexists \, \epsilon >0 \mid |u(x) - \lambda | \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \} \)
Spettro residuo: \( \sigma_r(M_u) = \emptyset \).
Conclusione
Infine si è mostrato che \( \sigma(M_u) = \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \mid \nexists \, \epsilon >0 \mid |u(x) - \lambda | \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \} \)
Ora nel caso $u$ sia continua si ha che \( \{ \lambda \in \mathbb{C} \mid \nexists \, \epsilon >0 \mid |u(x) - \lambda | \ge \epsilon \text{ q.o.} \} = \overline{u(\mathbb{R})} \).
Infine se $u$ è continua e non costante \( M_u \) non è compatto perché il suo spettro non è numerabile.
